What the Islamic New Year is

The Islamic New Year is the first day of Muharram, the first month of the Hijri calendar. It marks the turn of the year counted from the Hijrah, the Prophet’s migration from Makkah to Madinah that the Quran recalls (Quran 9:40), so the year 1449 AH, which begins in June 2027, is the 1,449th lunar year since then.

Unlike the two Eids, the new year has no prayer or festival attached to it, and Muslims mark it in different ways or not at all: for many it is simply a moment to look back on the year and take stock. What gives Muharram its standing is that it is one of the four sacred months of the year (Quran 9:36).

Why it comes earlier each year

Twelve lunar months make about 354 days, eleven fewer than the solar year, so the Islamic New Year moves about eleven days earlier in the Gregorian calendar every year: from early June in 2027 back through spring, winter and autumn, until in around 33 years it returns to June. The table shows the dates ahead. To read the verses about the months and the Hijrah in full, see Surah at-Tawbah on muslimsaroundtheworld.org.
